Dialectical thinking is the foundation of evidence-based Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & refers to allowing contradicting ideas to co-exist. It can reduce the internal struggle we have with our own thoughts, which is often a source of our emotional suffering. I integrate into therapy DBT strategies of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation & interpersonal effectiveness to strengthen inner resources.
I draw on what is commonly referred to as “inner child therapy”or Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy to gain perspective on how our past informs the ways in which we interact with the world at present. Parts work relies on practicing curiosity to better understand our internal motivations, & empathy to resolve internal conflicts that affect our quality of life.
The body talks. Our bodies communicate pain & excitement, tell us when we’re hungry or tired, & adapt to our needs to the best of their abilities. Disruption to our life, to our relationship with food, to our sense of self-worth, & to our health can foster a deep body-mind disconnect. I bring into sessions elements of Somatic Experiencing (SE), a type of Somatic therapy, to encourage responsiveness & attunement to the body’s signals.
Cognition refers to the mental processes that allow us to think, learn & understand. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps us identify & reframe unhelpful thoughts that challenge our ability to respond in ways that truly serve us. I include elements of CBT into therapy to expand the lens through which we interpret ourselves & the world.
